Telecom Argentina to expand FTTH services

Aiming to boost infrastructure for convergence services through to 2020, Telecom Argentina has announced $5 billion in investment.

The telco giant, the country’s first convergent player following its merger with Cablevisión, said $1.3 billion will be invested in 2018, mostly to update and expand connectivity infrastructure. The remaining $3.7 billion will be spent during 2019 and 2020.

Building on the synergies between the networks of Personal (its commercial brand) and Cablevisión, Telecom Argentina will expand fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) across the country. “It will enable us to deliver not only our own digital content, but third parties’ content, with more quality and faster speed,” said the telco.

In addition, part of the investment will be allocated to bring IPTV into Cablevisión homes, boosting the reach of hybrid platforms like Flow and Arnet, which integrate video-on-demand (VOD) and other advanced TV features.

The announcement has been made as two of Telecom Argentina’s main competitors, Telefónica and América Móvil, have been granted pay-TV licences in Argentina, opening the door to them being able to offering convergent services too.
