DIGI to launch 4G network in June

Hungarian triple-play fixed broadband operator DIGI – owned by Romania’s RCS&RDS – has notified the telecoms regulator, the National Media & Infocommunications Authority (NMHH), that it aims to launch its delayed 4G mobile network service with national roaming on 15 June 2018, having scrapped a previous March target date, Hungarian business daily Vilaggazdasag reports. The reason for the latest delay may indicate that DIGI is yet to finalise its roaming agreement with its rival(s), the report surmised.

According to TeleGeography in September 2014 fixed broadband, pay-TV and telephony operator DIGI won an 1800MHz band (2×5MHz) 4G LTE-suitable network operating licence. DIGI offers an existing MVNO-based data-only service (‘DIGI Net mobil’) over the Telenor Hungary network, although it has not witnessed major take-up.
