TiVo launches TV platform

TiVo last week introduced what it’s calling its “Next-Gen Platform” that aims to bring viewers a unified way to watch content from pay-TV providers and streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime.

TiVo said the app-based, cloud-powered platform lets cable operators provide consumers “hyper-personalization, recommendations and voice control,” for multiscreen viewing. It also boasts unified integration of linear, OTT, on-demand, and DVR content. This in turn, will help service providers “reduce churn, drive customer engagement, stay ahead of the competition and own the customer experience by bringing calm to a world of increasing entertainment chaos,” TiVo said.

The platform will deliver a user’s content to Linux and Android TV managed set-top boxes, as well as unmanaged devices like Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV.

TiVo said another key feature is that the next-gen platform helps assist operators as they transition to IP-based architecture. The migration can be deployed using different methods including all-QAM, all-IPTV, or hybrid QAM/IP approaches.

“Consumers face a fragmented, ever-changing media landscape as new services, content sources and devices continue to proliferate,” Michael Hawkey, SVP and general manager of user experience at TiVo, said in a statement. “Media companies are compelled to evolve. TiVo’s Next-Gen Platform is specifically designed to meet the consumer’s insatiable desire for entertainment while enabling operators to maintain market share and remain relevant amid growing competition.”

TiVo has announced any client deals at this point, but the new platform will be demoed this week at CES in Las Vegas, and more information may come out then.
