Free internet in all ward offices of KMC soon

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has started providing free wi-fi service across all ward offices in Kathmandu.

Gyanendra Karki, spokesperson for KMC, said free internet service is being provided in all ward offices in a bid to facilitate service seekers. “KMC had earlier announced it would digitise all its services and administrative works. Free internet service in ward offices is a part of fully digitising Kathmandu city.”

As per Karki, KMC has already started delivering free internet at 13 ward offices in Kathmandu and plans to extend the service in the remaining 12 ward offices soon.

“Service seekers will have access to their personal documents at the ward offices itself following the availability of free internet service. Similarly, other administrative works will also be made easier in ward offices having 24-hour internet service,” said Karki.

Meanwhile, KMC is also planning to provide free internet services in different public places within the jurisdiction of KMC.

In another development, Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has been mulling to deliver free internet services in public places in the Valley by year-end. Moreover, NTA is in the process to award contract to two internet service providers (ISPs) to develop internet broadband network and deliver free internet service in country’s administrative hub Singhadurbar, areas around Media Village at Sinamangal and Padma Kanya Multiple Campus in Dillibazar.

As per NTA, Subisu, WorldLink, BroadLink and Vianet have submitted proposals to provide free internet via wi-fi in the aforementioned areas. The selected ISPs will have to provide free internet access in these places for a period of two years and can charge customers a minimal amount after that. Similarly, the selected ISPs will have to start delivering free internet service in these places within two months of being awarded contract by NTA.
