Internet enabled devices present in half of US TV homes

According to the 2017 Total Audience Report for Q2, over half ( 58.7%) of TV-owning homes in the US now own at least one internet-enabled device through which viewers can connect to streaming content on their TV set.

These devices include multimedia devices (such as Apple TV, Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV or Roku), game consoles and smart TVs.

The penetration of US households with access to at least one such device has grown to 69.5 million – an increase of 12% since June 2016, the report found. Of these, 6.5 million of them have access to all three.

Internet-enabled game consoles are the most ubiquitous devices, now owned by 39 million households – over a third of all homes with a TV.

The report also found that US adults are spending more time using overall multimedia devices on a daily basis – increasing from 14 minutes per day in the second quarter of 2016 to 19 minutes each day during the same period in 2017.
