Telenor increases broadband speeds by 150 percent

Telenor has announced it is increasing broadband speeds by up to 150 per cent for both Telenor and Canal Digital Cable subscribers.

The Norwegian telco says speeds of 500 Mbps are now available for 550,000 homes across the country.

“The growth in the broadband network is enormous. In order to offer good broadband experiences across the country, we spend a billion dollars on upgrading the web every year, as we now speed up most broadband customers,” says Birgit Bjørnsen, head of television and broadband in Telenor Norway.

The new speeds on fibre broadband and cable broadband will be introduced on January 1, 2018.

Customers with broadband 30 Mbps will receive 100 Mbps; those with 60 are upgraded to 100Mbps; 100 Mbps becomes 250 Mbps. There is no increase for customers already on 500 Mbps.

“The Internet is not symmetrical, so it is still the case that customers most need download. People load far more down from, for example, YouTube than they upload. Average customers have stopped file sharing because there is so much content available on the internet already, explains Bjørnsen.

After the speed increase, over half of broadband customers via fibre or fibre-based broadband (cable) will have a speed of 100 Mbps or more.
