Estonia plans rural internet rollout

The government of Estonia is looking to conduct a tender to find a private operator to connect sparsely populated rural areas to high speed internet networks. With the country’s private telcos concentrating their efforts on urban and suburban markets, authorities say customers in outlying regions are faced with no prospect of accessing ultra-broadband infrastructure. According to a report from The Baltic Times, the government now wants to award a subsidy of EUR20 million (USD23.5 million) to finance a public-private partnership scheme to ensure that the entire population has access to a broadband line by 2022.
