DoCoMo demos 5G CPE for holographic video calls

Japan's NTT DoCoMo has conducted a live demonstration of 5G customer premises equipment at an exhibition in Tokyo.

The demonstration at the “DOCOMO Encounter the revelation of “near”–future - 5G creates lifestyles of future” exhibition involved a live demonstration of holographic video calls over 5G mmWave CPEs.

Huawei provided the 5G core network, base stations and CPE for the demonstration, which used a Microsoft HoloLens helmet for the holographic video call.

5G fixed wireless access services are expected to achieve indoor data rates of around 2Gbps, which has the potential to enable a range of new consumer and enterprise services.

"The 5G terminal industry chain is a core link in the 5G E2E industry chain. The first successful live-demo on 5G mmWave CPEs is a groundbreaking progress in our joint effort with NTT DoCoMo to build an end to end industry chain,” Huawei VP of 5G products Gan Bin said.

“This success makes us more confident in realizing the goal of commercializing 5G by 2020."

DoCoMo separately announced it has teamed up with Sumitomo to test the real-time collection of traffic information over 5G networks.

The trial system uses high-definition sensors mounted on vehicles and installed on roadsides or in buildings to collect and analyze traffic information in real time.

Data is collected using high-definition cameras, LiDAR (light detection and ranging) sensors that us laser light to measure the distances and positions of targets as well as millimeter-wave sensors that use radio waves to measure distances and positions.

The collected data has the potential to be used in autonomous vehicles and other assisted driving technologies.
