Peru watchdog suspends unlimited data plans temporarily

Peruvian telecoms regulator the Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Organismo Supervisor de Inversion Privada en Telecommuniciones, Osiptel) has ordered the temporary suspension of the sale of unlimited mobile data plans introduced in late October/early November.

The regulator stated that the ‘precautionary measures’ were being applied to Movistar, Entel, Claro and Bitel as the operators had breached rules by failing to provide detailed, clear and accurate information about the tariffs, and had not registered the plans via Osiptel’s Information and Tariff Registration System (Sistema de Informacion y Registro de Tarifas, SIRT).

According to the watchdog, the information that the cellcos had provided to users made making decisions difficult and could lead to consumption errors. Therefore, to avoid any harm to consumers, Osiptel decided to temporarily suspend the commercialisation of these plans.
