SK Telecom boosts coverage of fastest mobile broadband services

SK Telecom (SKT) has expanded the coverage of its fastest speed mobile broadband connectivity, with downlink speeds of between 700Mbps and 900Mbps now available in 75 cities and 31 counties across South Korea. In a press release outlining the development, SKT confirmed that since introducing what it claimed was the world’s first five-band carrier aggregation (5C) in July, this had been ‘aggressively’ rolled out in the main areas of Seoul, Chungcheong and Yeongnam regions by August, and was now available in major cities in the Jeolla Provinces such as Yeosu, Naju, and Gwangyang, and populated cities of Gangwon Province, including Wonju, Gangneung and Sokcho. By aggregating five component carriers, SKT’s 5C service supports download speeds of up to 700Mbps.

Meanwhile, the cellco confirmed that its fastest service, which combines tri-band and quad-band carrier aggregation with 4×4 MIMO to achieve download speeds of up to 900Mbps, is now available in ‘major commercial districts’ throughout Korea, including Gangnam, Hongdae, Sinsa (Garosu-gil), Yeouido, Jamsil, Myeondong, Jongno in Seoul; Seomyeon in Busan; Dongseongno in Daegu; Chungjangno in Gwangju; Samsan-dong in Ulsan; Daejeon City Hall; Gochang and Wanju in North Jeolla Province; and Gwangyang, Naju, Boseung, Yeosu, Yeongam and Haenam in South Jeolla Province.
