Movistar brings 3G services to remote areas of Chile

Spanish-backed wireless provider Movistar Chile has rolled out 3G services to 15 remote locations in Atacama region.

The deployment forms part of Movistar’s commitment to provide connectivity to unserved or underserved locations under the terms of its 700MHz licence. The deployment covered eleven remote areas, including Barranquilla, Duraznito, and Malaguin as well as four rural schools in Huasco province.

In its press release, Movistar noted that one of the school had just twelve pupils and a single teacher. Commenting on the development, Movistar’s deputy regional manager for Atacama region, Jaime Subiabre was quoted as saying: ‘Our commitment is to bring connectivity to the whole country and narrow the digital divide, so today the inhabitants of our region take a giant step towards the future, improving their quality of life and development. We are sure that everyone will greatly appreciate this service that will now open multiple possibilities with access to digital communication.’
