Singtel's Dash mobile wallet app adds Visa virtual account

Singtel Dash app users, you now have a Dash Visa virtual (prepaid) account to pay at all Visa PayWave accepted stores.

What this means is you now own a virtual Visa card as an online wallet - complete with its own 16 digit number and CVV. So you can pay with your phone at over 50,000 Visa PayWave merchants islandwide, and at local e-commerce sites like Qoo10, Zalora and HungryGoWhere for tomorrow’s lunch.

The app is available to everyone regardless of your telco allegiance, plus it even works when the app is running in the background.

For paranoid online shoppers and spendthrift kids, this is the perfect solution over conventional NFC-payment options like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. If anything happens, you’ll only lose whatever is in the online wallet, which can only be topped up to an S$999 maximum amount.

One of the coolest features of the Dash app is sending cash to just about anyone. Just enter the number of the person you’re sending the cash to, and if they don’t have the app they’ll be prompted to download it. Just register (as long as you’re 16 and above) and the money is right there, along with a new virtual Visa card with its own 16 digit number and very own CVV code. It’s a pretty neat idea for allowances and birthday gifts to your kids.

There are a few caveats though. Dash Visa only works on local e-commerce sites or apps using local payment gateways, so you’re limited to Grab for your shopping trips (Uber’s payment gateway isn’t local).

Singtel is working on integrating Dash for use at overseas holidays and at top e-commerce sites like Amazon, as well as integration with Apple Pay and PayNow. We’ll keep you updated once those regulatory hurdles have been lifted.
