HKT launches Hong Kong’s first LTE-A network

Hong Kong's HKT has announced the launch of the market's first LTE-A 600Mbps mobile network.

The Hong Kong operator has aggregated three 20MHz carriers and implemented 256 quadrature amplitude modulation (256QAM) to achieve peak downlink speeds of 600Mbps and uplink speeds of 50Mbps.

Compatible devices capable of taking full advantage of the speeds available include the newly launched Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus as well as the Sony XZ Premium.

HKT also commercially launched Hong Kong’s first LTE-A 300Mbps network in 2014, and Hong Kong’s first IP-RAN based LTE-A 450Mbps network last year.

“We are proud to have always been a leader in LTE-A adoption and we will continue to deploy advanced technologies in order to provide the best user experience,” HKT group managing director Alex Arena said.

HKT is also a leading voice in the push to convince local regulator Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) to urgently develop a clear spectrum roadmap that covers the release of spectrum for 5G services.
