Lebanon police department holds internet safety forum for parents

Now more than ever, kids have access to all kinds of digital devices. But the internet can be a dangerous place, and Lebanon police think some parents might not be aware.

That's why the department held an internet safety forum on Thursday.

It covered methods parents can use to help ensure their kids are using the web safely.

“Many parents, because of the generational gap, aren't completely versed in what the internet has to offer their children, and it's all about education to start with,” Chief Richard Mello said.

He said popular websites and apps, like Facebook and Snapchat, are often used by online predators to target young kids.

“We do have people who prey on children, and they use these websites as an avenue to get at children,” Mello said.

He said bringing attention to the issue is crucial.

“Certainly the ones that we know about are the good scenarios, because somebody is telling us and allowing us to investigate. But there are many, many, many other scenarios where kids are getting contacted by adults that we don't know about, and that we're not becoming aware of,” Mello said.
