Telecom service for travelers launches in Ukraine

An international telecom company is launching in Ukraine a SIM card that can work in 229 countries around the globe while charging internet data rates lower than any other Ukrainian carrier does abroad.

Called Drimsim, the operator works via a smartphone application available for the Android and iOS devices. In the app, a user can see each country’s mobile tariffs. The app also shows the money on one’s account, and provides round the clock online support.

The balance can be replenished by using a bank card (the time for this operation can also be set automatically).

Drimsim does not have tariff plans — it charges only for used minutes, SMS messages, and megabytes. On average, the price for 1 megabyte is 1-2 euro cents, while 1 minute of GSM conversation rounds out at around 35 euro cents (but 7 euro cents in the U.S. and 12 euro cents in the U.K.).

Incoming calls go through U.K. operators (+44 code) as Britain is the base station for Drimsim.

The SIM card’s price is 10 euros.

Drimsim was founded in 2011, and it took the company 5 years to develop the tech and to reach an agreement with numerous mobile carriers and enter the mass market. The operator has its headquarters in Barcelona, Spain and has logistic centers in four other countries: Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Lebanon.

According to Ukrainian online tech journal AIN.ua, Drimsim has currently 50 staffers and 2,000 subscribers.

“I dreamed of doing what I like most in any spot in the world… and I saw a technical solution for this,” says Sergey Redkov, Drimsim founder.

In May, Ukraine became the first country in which the brand was officially presented.
