eir launches Wi-Fi calling

Ireland’s eir has announced the launch of its ‘WiFi Calling’ service, saying in a press release that it expects around 144,000 eir mobile and Meteor mobile subscribers will be able to make and receive calls and texts even when outside of mobile network coverage as a result. The service is reportedly available to both new and existing post-paid customers on selected plans, with the operator noting that compatible handsets initially include the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, S7 and S7 Edge and S8 and S8 Plus, as well as Apple’s iPhone 5C and any newer iPhone model. eir’s WiFi Calling is built into customer handsets, making it easy for them to access all their existing contacts without requiring a separate app, and the service requires only that a customer switch on the relevant setting once the handset software is updated.

Commenting on the matter, Sinead Morrissey, Head of Mobile Product at eir, said: ‘Our WiFi Calling service is a progressive leap forward in our ambition to bring seamless connectivity to our customers – and a trailblazing moment for eir as the first operator in Ireland to introduce the service. This service brings a greatly improved customer experience, enabling the peace of mind to make calls from wherever it suits.’
