Telekom Networks Malawi invests in 4G network

Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM), the country’s second largest mobile operator by subscribers, plans to invest an additional USD30 million in its 4G LTE network to improve coverage in the four major cities of Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Zomba. ‘The upgrade aims to improve the agility, speed and stability of our mobile internet services,’ Reuters cites a company statement as saying. The firm, which competes with Bharti Airtel of India’s local unit Airtel Malawi, added that the additional spending follows the roughly MWK9.2 billion (USD12.5 million) invested last year in coverage expansion, fixed and mobile broadband technologies and various other technical improvements.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database states that TNM switched on its LTE network, which supports maximum downstream speeds of 100Mbps, in June 2016.
