Verizon enhances Fios fiber to deliver 940Mbps downlink

Verizon has announced an increase in the speed of its Fios fibre service to almost a gigabit – just days after AT&T announced it was expanding its gigabit fibre services. Verizon said it would charge $69.99 for Fios Gigabit Connection in year one, with extra bundled services for $10 more. The company offered download speeds up to 940Mbps and uploads up to 880Mbps. Ken Dixon, president of Verizon’s consumer wireline business, said: “No cable provider comes close to offering the speeds and power of Fios Gigabit connection on this kind of scale. And we’ve priced it so that millions can enjoy it.” AT&T last week said it was expanding its gigabit fibre services to homes in eight more US cities, potentially adding 2 million premises by the end of 2017 to the 4.6 million homes now accessible. The company said that it plans to expand the fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) coverage to 12.5 million locations by the middle of 2019. Verizon and AT&T will not be competing in the same cities, as each will be laying fibre within the states where they already offer local residential telephone services., Verizon has since fine-tuned the service, launched in January as Fios Instant Internet, with new firmware and diagnostic tools to increase performance. Fios Gigabit Connection is available to over 8 million homes in parts of New York; New Jersey; Philadelphia; Richmond, Virginia; Hampton Roads, Virginia; Boston, Providence and Washington DC.
