Chile offers tender for 116 DTT licences

Chilean communications regulator Subtel has officially launched the tender for new digital TV concessions as part of the transition to DTT envisaged under the country’s 2014 Digital TV Act. A total of 116 DTT frequencies will be offered for national, regional, local and community broadcasts as the country prepares for the analogue switchoff scheduled for 2019. Under the act, 40 percent of concessions are reserved for local and religious media companies, and concessionaires have to air at least four hours of cultural content per week. Back in 2014, Chilean president Michelle Bachelet said the transition from analogue to digital represented a “huge leap” that would allow the country to "increase the convergence between television and internet, bringing us to smart television.”
