PLDT dominates home broadband

PLDT Inc. dominated the home broadband business last year as it saw a 10 percent growth in revenues in that segment in 2016 from a year ago.

In a statement, PLDT said it had a market share of over 60 percent of the home broadband business last year given its broadband bundles offering quality data service, as well as content and other digital services.

PLDT’s revenue from the home broadband business reached P29.3 billion last year, up 10 percent year-on-year.

Along with the enterprise business, home broadband is expected to be one of the key growth drivers for the PLDT Group as it moves toward data and digital services.

“Consumer demand for home broadband is growing and PLDT HOME is at the forefront of meeting this need. We are encouraged by the momentum that PLDT HOME has built through six consecutive years of accelerating growth and we are ready to serve a larger share of this expanding market,” Oscar Enrico Reyes Jr., PLDT first vice president and HOME business head said.

At present, PLDT’s fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service is available in key urban areas nationwide.

The service is delivered through PLDT HOME Fibr which can deliver speeds of up to one gigabit per second (Gbps) and allow users to browse multiple websites, upload hundreds of photos, and download a full-length movie in seconds.

“Beyond internet access, we are pioneering the Smart Home so Filipino families will feel safer, be more productive and enjoy the convenience brought about by our growing suite of digital solutions,” Reyes said.

PLDT is expanding its FTTH service and aims to cover 4.4 million homes by the end of the year.

As of end-2016, PLDT’s FTTH reached 2.8 million homes.

To further extend the reach of its fiber-speed internet service, PLDT has started to deploy Huawei Technologies’ G.fast, a hybrid fiber technology which can provide data speeds of up to 600 to 700 Mbps per user.

The technology connects buildings and dwellings with fiber optic cables and uses special equipment so the internal copper wiring of the structure could deliver fiber-like data speeds.

By the end of next year, PLDT plans to shift all its subscribers in ‘fiber-fast’ connections.

Over the last 10 years, PLDT has spent P300 billion or $6 billion to roll out the country’s most extensive transmission and distribution network infrastructure which now has over 150,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables catering to the growing data traffic of its fixed line and mobile networks.
