Viber introduces Encrypted Messages

Following the release this week by WikiLeaks of alleged CIA hacking of Samsung Smart televisions, globally popular (not in Iran) messaging app Viber announced it has launched its latest new feature of “Secret Messages” or self-destructing chats.

The new feature, already available from other messaging apps like Telegram messenger (popular in Iran) and other services like SnapChat, is likely to quell fears of users of the app that the US intelligence services can snoop on their messages, Tech Spot writes.

The new feature called “Secret Messages” works as per the other apps available, meaning conversations between two people will disappear after a set period of time.

All Viber conversations and messages are encrypted end-to-end — whether they are secret or regular chats — and users also have the option to lock secret chats with a PIN code as well.

Regular chats also come with the availability to add extra security features as well as timer-based images and shorter messaging periods between users.

Viber was previously the most popular messaging application in Iran before the advent of Telegram and the throttling of its service in 2013.

Viber’s secret chats function should be rolling out to users on Android and iOS early next week.
