RTI Connectivity taps NEC for HK-Guam cable

RTI Connectivity, a subsea cable development company established by US entrepreneurs in Singapore, has contracted NEC to supply a subsea cable linking Hong Kong and Guam.

The 3,900km Hong Kong-Guam Cable System (HK-G) is expected to begin operation in January 2020, the companies announced.

The HK-G will use 100Gbps optical transmission technology to deliver a total design capacity of over 48Tbps.

In addition to the Hong Kong-Guam route, the cable is slated to connect in Guam with the in-construction SEA-US subsea cable system, which NEC started constructing in March 2015. The consortium building the 15,000km SEA-US system recently announced two new developments taking the project close to completion.

The HK-G will also complement other regional cable systems to increase network redundancy along the route between the two regions.

"NEC is delighted to be selected as the supplier of the HK-G Submarine Cable planned by RTI Connectivity," commented Toru Kawauchi, GM of NEC's submarine network division.

"With Guam becoming a new hub in the Pacific, we look forward to helping the RTI group of companies provide for the expanding Asia-Pacific demand for more connectivity."
