LG Electronics has developed and successfully trialed a 80MHz bandwidth Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) based full duplex radio technology that will be used for 5G networks.
Co-developed with South Korea's Yonsei University, LG said the new technology will increase efficiency of frequency by up to two times compared to time division duplex (TDD) in the next-generation network.
TDD sets different times for upload and download in the same frequency, while frequency division duplex (FDR) allocates different frequencies for upload and download. China's mobile operator uses LTE-TDD, while Korean counterparts use LTE-FDR.
In full duplex radio, download and upload can be done at the same time in the same frequency. Therefore, theoretically, data transfer rate is two times that of TDD.
LG has been developing the technology since 2014, and in October last year it successfully trialed the technology in 20MHz bandwidth.
The South Korean tech giant said it developed the antenna and the digital and antenna technology required to realize full duplex radio in one system, allowing easy use for vendors.
In September, compatriot Samsung Electronics successfully trialed handover technology between 5G base stations.
