Oman reinforces telecom and IT infrastructure through Awasr

Oman is upbeat about its digital evolution journey aiming to bolster sustainable development efforts in the country.

The sultanate has reason to celebrate as the launch of Awasr, the country’s first specialised high speed fibre Internet service provider, in the first quarter of the year, will definitely enhance the telecommunications and information technology sector.

Awasr focuses on providing ultra-high speed Internet for businesses and homes, and is expected to see a higher public demand on its packages, which come with exceptional features. The packages enhance productivity and efficiency while reducing costs, time and efforts, especially with the introduction of 1 GB package in the Omani market for the first time.

Ghaith bin Mohammed al Darmaki, chief technology officer, Awasr, said, “Undoubtedly, enhancing the use of ultra-high speed Internet in society plays a pivotal role in bolstering the sultanate’s continuous efforts for sustainable development. Through our fibre home and business packages offered at competitive prices, we will contribute to the country’s vision for a digitally empowered future. We will arm the Omani generation with the concepts of innovation, and transfer and localise knowledge to achieve the Omani government’s vision to provide better life and sustainable development.”

Awasr offers four fibrenet home packages with 20 Mbps, 50 Mbps, 150 Mbps and 1 Gbps speeds, and several fibrenet business packages with the following speeds: 5 Mbps for small businesses, 10 Mbps and 30 Mbps for medium businesses and 70 Mbps and 120 Mbps for large businesses.

The Internet was a first step towards what we know as the World Wide Web, the software protocol governing the online world and influencing how we do business, learn, socialise and find entertainment.

Whether it is empowering our schools with the latest learning tools, linking our hospitals directly with the global medical community or the increasing permeation of smart phones and tablets, the sultanate’s demand for Internet capacity seems unstoppable.

Driving this remarkable growth is the development of the knowledge economy. As information increasingly becomes the valued commodity, broadband networks are replacing highways and shipping lanes as the core arteries over which goods are exchanged. On a consumer level, high capacity activities like video sharing on desktops and mobile devices are growing at an exponential rate.

Beyond the individual, broadband connectivity is playing an increasing role in underpinning broader societal progress. This is particularly evident in medicine, where doctors here can work in real time with doctors from Canada, the US or China.

Awasr has recently been awarded Grade 1 Licence by the local Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).
