Telefónica to deploy Vivendi’s mobile-first video services

Telefónica will offer customers TV and music services specially designed for mobile devices after signing a deal with Vivendi.

The Spain-based operator will roll out the media company’s Studio+ and WatchMusic to subscribers in Latin America, with Brazil the first to get the services in October.

Studio+, which launched in April, includes TV series shot exclusively for mobile, which are 10 minutes in length.

Telefónica said the initial programme line-up would be revealed in the coming weeks.

WatchMusic offers a catalogue of videos, concerts, festivals, live streaming and original content.

The service has been “optimised for mobile devices” but can be watched across multiple platforms, the two companies said.

Both services will be delivered ad-free through the Movistar and Vivo brands, with customers offered a week or a month’s trial.

Michael Duncan, Telefónica Group CEO of the Consumer Unit, said: “We are delighted to bring Vivendi’s premium mobile entertainment content to our customers.

“We’ve seen a mobile first mind-set that confirms the smartphone is the most favoured way to access internet experiences for most of our millions of mobile customers worldwide.”

Dominique Delport, Chairman of Vivendi Content, said: “We are very happy and proud that Telefónica has chosen to be the first telecom partner to launch the new Studio+ and WatchMusic services.

“Vivendi and Telefonica share the same view that compelling content and innovative formats will meet the expectations of new audiences.

“There is still a lack of premium content designed for mobile customers.

“We hope with this worldwide premiere to provide an immersive and addictive experience that we intend to roll out globally in the next months”.

Delport used a keynote speech at this month’s IBC event to urge telcos to come and work with them on mobile-first services.
