Google Fiber expands with takeover of Webpass

Google is expanding its fibre network in the US with the acquisition of San Francisco-based operator Webpass. Google said the deal will help accelerate the deployment of fast internet connections for customers across the US. Webpass will remain focused on rapid deployment of high-speed connections for residential and commercial buildings, primarily using point-to-point wireless. The transaction is expected to close this summer, subject to regulatory approvals.

Started in 2003, Webpass already has tens of thousands of customers across five major markets in the US and offers connections up to 1 Gbps. It will continue to expand in San Francisco, Oakland, Emeryville, Berkeley, San Diego, Miami, Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Chicago and Boston. No financial details of the takeover were disclosed.
