MTN Ghana commercial 4G launch expected in June

MTN Ghana, the country’s largest cellco in terms of subscribers, is set to roll out commercial 4G LTE services in June this year, reports News Ghana. Successful regional tests have already been carried out, with the operator’s CEO, Ebenezer Asante, cited as saying: ‘We have the [4G] service available in Accra and all the regional capitals. We expect to have a full-scale commercial launch of the 4G [service] by June this year.’

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in December 2015 the National Communications Authority (NCA) revealed MTN Ghana as the winner of one lot of 2×10MHz spectrum in the 4G LTE-suitable 800MHz mobile band. The regulator had previously set a minimum reserve price of USD67.5 million, noting the licence will be valid for 15 years. In April 2016, meanwhile, USD18 million was mooted to be invested in the rollout of MTN’s 4G technology, with LTE testing having begun on more than 60 cell sites in four regions across the country.
