Vodafone still interested in Mobilis Algeria

British telecoms group Vodafone is still reportedly interested in entering the Algerian mobile market via the acquisition of a stake in Mobilis, the mobile arm of state-owned telecoms provider Algerie Teleco (AT). Impact24 reports that Johannes Hummer, director of Vodafone Group’s projects for Africa, met with AT’s CEO Azouaou Mehmel earlier this week; the two parties reportedly discussed Vodafone’s potential purchase of a stake in Mobilis, in addition to a proposal for a partnership in regards to the development and marketing of 4G services in the country.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, the Council of State Holdings (Conseil des participations de l’Etat, CPE), the agency managing the government’s stake in business entities, is planning to list a 20% stake in Mobilis on the Algiers Stock Exchange. In December 2014 the country’s then ICT minister Zohra Derdouri revealed that Vodafone and French telecoms giant Orange had both ‘expressed interest’ in entering the Algerian market, though both were yet to make any ‘concrete’ offers.
