Telenor launches ‘4G+’ network in five cities

Danish operator Telenor has embarked on a ‘4G+’ network deployment using carrier aggregation (CA) technology in the 1800MHz and 2600MHz frequency bands. Telenor disclosed that 4G+ is already enabled in selected locations in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg, Odense and Roskilde, with plans to upgrade nearly 100 base transceiver stations (BTS) by the end of the year, with 330 sites to follow in Q1 2016. In addition, the operator is currently trialling CA using 20MHz of spectrum in three frequency bands in cooperation with Intel; going forward, the company will upgrade 80 BTS with the technology in the largest cities before the end of March 2016.

Telenor launched its LTE network in the 1800MHz band in March 2013 – via a network sharing agreement with Telia – and currently provides 4G services to 85% of the Danish population. The operator also introduced Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) technology in November 2015, after selecting Nokia Networks to supply and implement its VoLTE solution in December 2014.
