Nokia, Oi Brasil announce IoT partnership

Nokia and Oi Brasil have announced plans to work together on an IoT project.

The two companies said they plan to set up an LTE IoT lab, create a working group to study solutions and opportunities in IoT, develop joint projects and test innovative solutions.

They will focus on cellular IoT solutions, including LTE technologies for M2M, and target verticals including agribusiness, connected cars, smart homes and cities and e-health.

The lab, which will be based in in Rio de Janeiro, is slated to open in the first quarter of 2016.

Pedro Falcão, Head of Head of Network Technology and Systems at Oi Brasil, said: “The new IoT lab in cooperation with Nokia Networks will allow us to come up with new technology ideas and place Brasil on the global map in terms of IoT development."

Dimitri Diliani, Head of Latin America Market at Nokia Networks, added: "Nokia Networks foresees a Programmable World of more than 50 billion connected things by 2025.

“From cars, home appliances and smartphones to industrial equipment and health monitors, devices will be combined in extraordinary ways to improve lives and create boundless possibilities for people and businesses.

“Through our collaboration with Oi Brasil, we will develop solutions and mobile technology to capture the exciting new opportunities."

Meanwhile, Nokia announced it won a deal to provide and deploy a 3G network for VNPT-Net, a state-owned operator and subsidiary of the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group.

Last month, Nokia upped its revenue outlook for the full financial year, revealed plans to return €4 billion to shareholders and reduce its debt by €3 billion over the next two years.
