Orange bets on IoT targeting €600 million revenue by 2018

Telecom network operator Orange is betting big on its Internet of Things (IoT) business targeting revenue of €600 million.

Orange will roll out IoT network using LoRa technology (Long Range) in Angers, Avignon, Bordeaux, Douai and Lens, Grenoble, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Nantes, Nice, Paris, Rennes, Rouen, Toulon, Toulouse and Strasbourg in the first quarter of 2016.

“IoT is a key area in Orange’s Essentials2020 strategic plan, and France should play a key role in IoT takeoff in Europe,” said Alain Maloberti, SVP of Orange Labs Networks.

Orange is continuing standardization work on future cellular networks (2G/4G), optimized for the IoT, which will be operational in 2017.

Telecom network vendor Ericsson and Orange will conduct the first usage trial of 2G/4G networks focusing on coverage in difficult areas such as basements and on sensor life.

Orange said Datavenue is targeting companies across all sectors, from industry, services and smart cities to insurance, healthcare, distribution and transport. Datavenue will feature two new complementary offerings: Live Objects, for connected objects, and Flexible Data, for data analysis.

Ericsson Mobility Report says there will be 28 billion connected devices by 2021. 5G mobile will be one of the pillars of IoT boom. Ericsson also predicted that there will be 150 million 5G subscriptions by 2021. Today, 4G Americas said 5G investments will not hurt investments planned for LTE-Advanced. In fact, there are more than 100 LTE-Advanced networks in the world.

Orange will conduct the world-first EC-GSM (Extended Coverage) trial in France using the 900 MHz band, with the aim to enhance device reachability by up to 20dB or a seven-fold improvement in the range of low-rate applications.

The world’s first LTE IoT trial in association with chipset maker Sequans will take place using devices with one receive antenna (instead of two), and half-duplex FDD, allowing for 60 percent cost reduction in comparison with existing LTE Cat 4.

Sequans and Ericsson will also demonstrate energy efficiency over GSM and LTE networks with Power Saving Mode (PSM) technology, enabling battery life of sensors by up to 10 years.

“Ericsson is providing the software-upgrade-only solution to accelerate cellular network for IoT, allowing operators to leverage their infrastructure investments to quickly capture new business opportunities now and in the future with 5G,” said Thomas Noren, head of Radio Product Management, Ericsson.
