Deutsche Telekom shows world’s first 3.5GHz LTE FDD-TDD 3 CA

Nokia Networks and Deutsche Telekom demonstrated the world’s first LTE-Advanced 3 carrier aggregation using band 3 FDD and band 42 TDD for improved mobile broadband experience, showing feasibility of LTE-TDD on 3.5 GHz band 42.

Deutsche Telekom demonstrated LTE-Advanced 3 carrier aggregation combining LTE-FDD in band 3 (1.8 GHz) with LTE-TDD in band 42 (3.5 GHz) on Nokia Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station confirms the ability of 3.5 GHz LTE-TDD technology to increase mobile broadband capacity.

Nokia Networks today said with 400 MHz of fresh TDD spectrum bandwidth available in many countries, 3.5 GHz provides a good solution for capacity expansion to meet future demand based on LTE and LTE-A Pro technologies.

“Spectrum plays a fundamental role for mobile communications as we look to exploit opportunities to meet the growing demand for network capacity. The demonstration of FDD-TDD 3 carrier aggregation sets a benchmark for a completely new combination of technologies including the band 42 which will be expected to be a mainstream TDD band,” said Rachid El Hattachi, SVP Technology Architecture & Blueprints, Deutsche Telekom.

GSA, in its report on October 13, 2015, said 12 out of 62 commercially launched TD-LTE networks currently use the 3.5 GHz LTE-TDD spectrum.

There were 17 TDD-FDD LTE commercially deployed networks worldwide. Nokia Networks is a TD-LTE supplier of 10 of these.
