TRA joins Geneva celebrations

The UAE delegation, headed by Mohammed Bin Ahmed Al Qamzi, Chairman of the Telecommunications Regulating Authority (TRA), participated in the ITU’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

Al Qamzi addressed the crowd with a speech during which he highlighted the bonds of cooperation and joint action between the UAE and the ITU since 1972 when the UAE became a member of the ITU.

The UAE delegation, participating in the global celebration, included Ambassador Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN and other international organisations in Geneva, Hamad Obaid Al Mansouri, TRA Director General and Majed Al Mesmar, TRA Deputy Director General for the Telecommunications Sector and a number of TRA officials.

“The United Arab Emirates has been and remains one of the active, influential countries in the International Telecommunication Union’s journey, since our nation’s independence on the December 2, 1971. The UAE’s relationship with the ITU was always based on the principle of influence and vulnerability; one that is inspired by our culture, founded on human interaction, sharing and openness to common and shared interests. We are keen on taking this relationship forward. In this context, we look forward to the UAE hosting the 2018 Plenipotentiary Conference, determined to make the global event yet another memorable landmark in the historic and humanitarian record,” said Mohammed Bin Ahmed Al Qamzi, President of the UAE Delegation, in his welcoming speech.

“With hope and confidence, the UAE aspires for a brighter future; inspired by the vision of the wise leadership and the ambitious national programmes and projects, many of which depend on the information and communication sector and its various outputs,” he added.

“Today, as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the International Telecommunication Union, we are overwhelmed with pride for the high, global status attained by the UAE, in general. This reflects the vision of our wise leadership along with the spirit of harmony and hard work by the people of this country, whether it is those who tie day by night inside the massive national workshops, or who represent the nation and its teams abroad, holding in their hearts love for the UAE leadership and its people and territory. Interpreting that love through strategies and programs reserving the nation’s global prestige and promoting its mission across international conferences,” said Ambassador Obaid Salem Al Zaabi.

The International Telecommunication Union was founded in 1865 as the International Telegraph Union.
