Local government authority the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has issued Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL) a fine of INR10 million (USD161,506) for misusing its authorisation to install cables in the city, the Economic Times writes. RMC Commissioner Vijay Nehra ordered the cellco to pay the fine by 15 March or face legal action, including a police complaint. According to the RMC, RJIL’s contractor installed parallel cables for a local internet service provider (ISP) without the necessary permissions, violating the terms of its authorisation. The authority has instructed the operator to cease its rollout and remove the other ISP’s cables.

In a statement the Commissioner noted that RJIL was informed of the infraction in late-2014 but had not acted: The RMC had issued two notices to the company. The first one was issued on 15 December 2014, but [the] company did not reply, while a second notice was issued on 22 January 2015. The company held its local contractor responsible for the misdeed but did not take any action against him. Therefore, the RMC decided to impose [a] penalty on the company.’
