Argentina triggers DTT broadcasting boom

Argentina's Autoridad Federal de Servicios de Comunicación Audiovisual (AFSCA) is setting up a public tender to award the 82 new frequency slots that have been made available for DTT signals.

"This is a very important step which will increase the networks' offer, and make it plural and diverse, while strengthening audiovisual content creation and jobs in the sector," said Martín Sabbatella, AFSCA's president.

The first public tenders will start in a month and aim to award 22 high-powered and 60 low-powered frequency slots, both for commercial and non-commercial activities.

With nearly 90% of the country covered by the DTT network, Argentina's new signals will be awarded for the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires, which will have ten out of the 22 high powered frequencies, and the cities of Cordoba, Tucuman, Resistencia, Formosa, Comodora Rivadavia and Santa Fe.

Following the development plan of the Televisión Digital Abierta (Argentina's DTT), AFSCA has also enabled the current analogue signals to enter the digital spectrum.

In addition, it has awarded nine signals for the country's universities, nine for provincial governments and eight for the Catholic Church.
