NDC stages workshop on Internet development trends

A workshop aimed at bringing the central government up to speed with the latest Internet developments and improving public communication was staged Jan. 24 by the National Development Council.

Premier Mao Chi-kuo said at the opening ceremony that it is imperative civil servants quickly get to grips with the new realities of the ever-changing Internet landscape.

“Open data is not a new technique, but an open attitude,” he said. “Providing real-time responses to online developments and opinions are key to cooperating with netizens and delivering win-win outcomes.”

Attended by more than 100 high-ranking officials, the one-day event addressed international development of information and communications technologies, application and implementation of public sector ICT strategies, and digital life and the virtual economy.

Presenters included a lineup of cyber experts and local Internet community leaders, some of whom advised candidates in Taiwan’s 2014 year-end local elections.

According to the NDC, the workshop is to be complemented by a multipronged government plan focusing on digital study, commodity prices, health data, senior citizens’ workforce, youth entrepreneurs and farmers.

Other initiatives include drafting a white paper on cyber practices and launching public policy website vTaiwan next month. The latter will see online participants come together to discuss leading issues in a bricks-and-mortar forum.

The next NDC seminar is set down for Jan. 31 and involves mid-ranking officials.
