Full 3G internet coverage within 2015

Communications Authority of Maldives (CAM) on Monday said that the new broadband policies made 3G internet services compulsory to all inhabited islands in the country.

Though previous policies left 3G coverage in the hands of telecom companies Dhiraagu and Ooredoo, the new policies compiled by CAM made availability of 3G services compulsory for all inhabited Maldivian islands.

“The main purpose of us, Communications, is to make 3G broadband services available to all inhabited islands. This work is now being carried out in collaboration with the two operators,” said an official from CAM.

The official said that CAM had been receiving complaints from islands that did not have 3G services available to them.

“We try to make them understand how it is. How work is being carried out on this.”

While 3G broadband services do not cover the whole country, residents of islands where the service isn’t available are faced with difficulty and consider this a huge issue.
