Global Mobile allowed to upgrade to WiMAX 2.1

Taiwan's National Communication Commission (NCC) has approved WiMAX operator Global Mobile's application to upgrade wireless communication technology from WiMAX 1.0 to WiMAX 2.1.

Based on WiMAX Forum's definition, WiMAX 2.1 includes part of IEEE 802.16e technology and part of 3GPP TD-LTE technology, NCC said. Therefore, WiMAX 2.1 subscribers can use TD-LTE-supporting terminal devices.

Global Mobile, in its business plan submitted to NCC for application for an operating license, planned to set up a total of 1,809 base stations, the company said. Global Mobile has set up 1,000 WiMAX 1.0 base stations and will add 809 WiMAX 2.1 base sations, the company indicated.

Vee TIME and Vmax Telecom, two other WiMAX operators, have also applied for technological upgrade from WiMAX 1.0 to WiMAX 2.1, NCC noted.
