Movistar Guatemala announced yesterday (29 October) that it has switched on its 1900MHz 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in ‘the capital city, provincial capitals and some tourist sites’. Humberto Pato-Vinuesa, Telefonica’s director of Guatemalan operations, commented: ‘This launch complements the comprehensive coverage of Movistar’s 3G network. Within the last ten months we have invested more than USD100 million. The good news is that all regions of Guatemala will enjoy the new LTE technology. It is our differentiator.’ At launch the cellco notes that a total of 14 handsets support the 4G network.
According to a corresponding press report by El Periodico, Movistar expects to cover the remainder of Guatemala City by February 2015, alongside Sacatepequez, Solola, Quetzaltenango and Escuintla.
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in June this year Movistar revealed plans to launch an LTE network covering 50% of the capital in the third quarter of 2014, placing its launch slightly behind schedule.
