Sri Lanka will complete the transition from analogue to digital terrestrial TV (DTT) broadcasting by 2020, the Minister of Mass Media and Information has announced.
Minister Keheliya Rambukw has told the cabinet the government is this year embarking on a five year plan to achieve nationwide DTT, based on the Japanese Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial (ISDB-T) standard.
Digital broadcasting will be established initially in the Western and Northern provinces by 2016, the minister said. The project will include the construction of antenna towers, transmission stations, an administration centre, and a digital TV centre.
The work would be undertaken following a loan of LKR 17 billion (US$130.5 millio) from the Japanese Government, while the Sri Lankan government would provide close to LKR 4 billion ($30.7 million), according to The Nation .
