ComTech minister calls integrated ICT policy

MINISTER of Communication Technology, Dr Omobola Johnson, has called on each state of the federation to develop an ICT policy aligned to the National ICT policy, which will articulate how the state will leverage ICT for socio-economic development.

She also said there was the need for the establishment of a Ministry of Communication Technology in each state of the federation and the ICT secretariat in the Federal Capital Territory to facilitate the articulation and implementation of the policy.

According to her, it was imperative that each state of the federation should hold Microwork/Elancing workshops with the objective of creating awareness about the work opportunities that microworks and elancing has for youths.

The minister made these observations in her keynote address at the third regular meeting of the National Council on Communication Technology holding in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Monday, which was made available to the Nigerian Tribune.

According to her, state governments “must be encouraged to ensure that all access to telecom infrastructure by states and local government operatives would require the consent of the excutive governor as part of measures to protect them from unlawful interference which not only affects commerce but threatens security in the state.”

She added that state governments should be encouraged to take necessary policy action on the implementation of relevant aspects of the Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan, adding that a collaborative framework to stem irregular/illegal use of radio frequency resource in Nigeria should be developed.
