15% of youth in Beijing addicted to internet

China is one of the first countries in the world to label "Internet addiction" as a clinical disorder posing a major threat to its teenagers. A recent survey done by Beijing Internet Association reports that Internet use has skyrocketed in China, especially among teens, and the challenge to tackle this issue hasn’t gotten easier.

The report compared the responses of over 2,000 young people and their parents. It showed that 20% of young people use the internet for an hour a day, a 35% use the internet for 1 to 2 hours per day. Another 27% of youth are online for 3 to 5 hours a day, and 15% of those surveyed spent 5 hours per day on the internet, which meets the standard of addiction. In a Beijing juvenile correction center, 85% of crimes were caused by internet addiction, and 70% of them were violent crimes.
