NTIA rounds up federal spectrum use information

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration launched spectrum.gov April 11, a website it hopes will serve as a hub for all information on federal spectrum use. In an April 11 blog post, NTIA Associate Administrator Karl Nebbia said the site provides a catalog of federal spectrum use in the 225 megahertz through 5 gigahertz bands.

The URL spectrum.gov redirects to an NTIA webpage titled "Federal Government Spectrum Compendium." For the time being, spectrum.gov is housed on the NTIA site.

"It contains information for each frequency band in which the federal government has significant operations on an exclusive or shared basis," wrote Nebbia. "NTIA's compendium shows agencies need spectrum for crucial tasks ranging from military flight testing to air traffic control to weather forecasting."

The band-by-band descriptions of how spectrum is used, the number and type of NTIA-authorized frequency assignments and the percentage of assignments by category provide a federal inventory of spectrum use. Cataloging what federal entities are using what (and how much) spectrum is part of NTIA's work to meet the Obama administration goal of freeing up 500 megahertz of spectrum by 2020.

The website, says Nebbia, also features a map showing where federal systems that use spectrum are located nationwide. This feature may be forthcoming as it was not found on the NTIA webpage, but a more general spectrum license map, which covers commercial use, can be found at FCC.gov.
