New technology offers high-speed net connection

Broadband users, who require high speed, can now opt for  Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) service which is now being made available in  Oman in some areas, according to Pradeep Thilakan, general manager of telecom division of Al Jassar, an expert on the wireless technology.

"The FTTH service allows customers access to high-end features such as voice, video, and future application like IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) besides Internet at high speeds. The high quality content at high speeds is not possible through conventional copper lines,- he added.

The telecom division of Al Jassar was engaged in the implementation of the first Fibre-To-The-Home project for Haya Water in 2010.

"We were the first contractors for Haya to execute the FTTH project we designed and laid optical fibre cables to connect 3000 houses in Mabaleh area and of them more than 130 are live now,- he said.

"The idea was to build the network. Now, it is up to Haya to have an agreement with the Omantel or Nawras to make the FTTH live. Bandwith available for voice, video and Internet are amazing, as in the case of copper the bandwith is limited and has less speed.  In the case of FTTH, a single fibre will be terminated to a CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) with which the customer can avail all the three integrated services at a much higher bandwidth rather than providing different services through multiple copper cables with a limitation on the bandwidth,- he added.

Pradeep, an expert and who has a vast repertoire of experience in rolling out such technologies, further says that there is good potential for FTTH in Oman.

He avers, "Introducing leading edge technology of this type will help to bring residents together in high speed networks and allow customers to simply upgrade bandwidth speeds as required. The introduction of the new FTTH system would open up a new and exciting world of entertainment and connectivity for users who are connected and able to benefit from the quality and higher speeds of the new optical fibre network.-

He adds, "FTTH is a futuristic network that is in big demand in developed countries. The FTTH with Gigabyte Passive Optical Network Technology (GPON) would give you a completely different experience with voice, data and video communications over the Internet. The FTTH networks could transform voice, data and entertainment experiences in the living room of homes.-

"Al Jassar has many plans on their sleeves to roll out many new telecom projects featuring new technologies in the coming months,- he added.
