MasOrange has completed the total shutdown of MásMóvil's mobile network, according to Expansión and as reported by specialized telecommunications media.
With the news, the company, formed from the merger between Orange and MásMóvil, will have completed the migration of all its customers to Orange's 4G network, consolidating one of Spain's largest operator tie-ups in recent years.
The switch-off has been executed progressively, reducing in recent weeks the number of active sites to 464 nodes, located mainly in Barcelona in the 1800 MHz band, as reported by telecommunications media Banda Ancha.
In March 2024, MásMóvil and France's Orange merged to form MasOrange, creating Spain's largest telecommunications company valued at approximately €19 billion ($22.18bn) and covering nearly 37 million mobile and fixed customers.
According to official data from the CNMC, Grupo MásMóvil, which includes several operators such as Yoigo and Pepephone, had 5,006 4G base stations deployed in Spain in 2023, the year before the merger with Orange.
For its part, Orange had 18,313 4G nodes, while Vodafone had 19,288, and Movistar had 21,529.
On the fixed side, MasOrange and Vodafone Spain signed an agreement in early August with Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC to create the FibreCo joint venture, which they claim will become Spain's largest fiber optic operator.
According to a Bloomberg report, Telefónica and MasOrange may have recently held informal talks for a possible deal to acquire Vodafone Spain.
