KT announced on Aug. 13 that it has held a launch meeting with the Ministry of National Defense for the “National Defense 5G Infrastructure Project” and begun full-scale construction of advanced national defense communications infrastructure worth 20.7 billion won (approximately $14.95 million).
The large-scale project will establish specialized fifth-generation (5G) networks and integrated control infrastructure for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. KT’s scope includes building a shared 5G core network for the Republic of Korea Defense Communication Command (ROK DCC), creating a unified 5G infrastructure control system, designing and installing 5G infrastructure networks for each service branch of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps, and deploying 5G services tailored to specific operational environments.
Based on its years of experience in building national defense ICT infrastructure, KT also plans to provide differentiated national defense 5G infrastructure and application services. It will apply a highly scalable 5G infrastructure design that takes into account the phase of expansion to the entire military and, through services that enhance the efficiency of unit operations -- such as smart forklifts for Army maintenance depots and an integrated ammunition depot control system for the Navy Fleet Command -- it will present a unit operation model capable of responding to future issues of declining troop resources.
Previously, KT had accumulated capabilities in building national defense infrastructure through projects such as the Ministry of National Defense’s next-generation military broadband convergence network (M-BcN) construction project and the next-generation defense integrated data center (DIDC) construction project. With the latest project as momentum, KT will further strengthen its expertise in the field of infrastructure-based national defense support systems and expand its business into the field of national defense IT -- by utilizing its AICT technological capabilities, including battlefield command systems -- to contribute to the realization of smart national defense.
