Indonesia is considering the creation of a "sovereign AI fund" to support its goal of becoming a regional hub for artificial intelligence, according to a government document seen by Reuters. The fund would be managed by Danantara Indonesia, the country's sovereign wealth fund, which oversees more than $900 billion in assets.
The proposal, outlined in a 179-page white paper, aims to accelerate Indonesia's AI development by 2030, with a focus on public-private partnerships and fiscal incentives for domestic investors. According to IndexBox, Indonesia's AI market is projected to grow significantly, aligning with regional trends in Southeast Asia.
The roadmap highlights challenges such as talent shortages, limited research funding, and uneven internet connectivity outside major cities. Global tech firms, including Nvidia and Microsoft, have already shown interest in Indonesia's AI initiatives. A Boston Consulting Group report estimates that AI could contribute 2.3% to 3.1% to ASEAN GDP by 2027, with Indonesia poised for the highest absolute impact.
