Uztelecom shifts fixed broadband strategy to focus on GPON, FTTx

Uzbektelecom (a.k.a. Uztelecom ) announced on Saturday that it will focus on deploying high-speed GPON and FTTx solutions across Uzbekistan starting this month as part of its telecoms infrastructure modernisation programme.

Uztelecom said that from this point on, all new home broadband deployments will be based on GPON or FTTB, depending on the technical availability in the customer’s area.

Meanwhile, for customers already subscribing to ADSL or VDSL services, Uztelecom will offer special incentives to encourage them to migrate to fibre, and will provide technical support and assistance during the transition.

Uztelecom said its service packages will offer a minimum connection speed of 100 Mbps. However, the telco also said it will change the terms of its fixed broadband tariffs because of the tech upgrade and “the rising cost of maintaining modern infrastructure”.

Uztelecom emphasised the added value that fibre connections will offer, from higher data speeds to improved network stability and “expanded opportunities for work, learning, and entertainment in the digital environment.”

A spokesperson for Uztelecom added that fibre is increasingly necessary to handle the digital demands of households.

“Smart TVs, online cinemas, video calls, remote work, e-learning, streaming, smart home systems, and security cameras — all require reliable, truly high-speed internet,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “Technologies that were relevant 10–15 years ago can no longer keep up with today’s demands and heavy usage.”
