True rolls out DSS technology to improve 4G/5G performance

Thai telco True Corp said that it has begun implementing dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) technology on the 2600-MHz band that it says will improve the performance and efficiency of its 4G and 5G services.

True said it has initially deployed DSS tech in the upscale Thonglor district of Bangkok, and plans to expand deployment nationwide. The upgrade is part of True’s network modernization plan.

As its full name implies, DSS enables 4G and 5G networks to flexibly share a spectrum band in real time based on user demand in a given cell, as opposed to conventional fixed-allocation approaches that require separate spectrum blocks for 4G and 5G.

For instance, when 5G users are densely concentrated in a particular area, DSS can allocate the entire 2600 MHz band for those users to optimise 5G performance. If more 4G users move into the same area, the network adjusts the 2600 MHz spectrum proportion to accommodate increased 4G demand.

True said it selected Thonglor as the first location for DSS deployment because of its popularity with young professionals, businesspeople, and expats, making it an ideal proving ground to showcase DSS’ capabilities.

True also said it had 14.2 million 5G subscribers nationwide as of the first quarter of 2025.
