Sri Lanka has marked a major milestone in its digital governance journey as the Information Communication Technology Agency (ICTA), in collaboration with LankaPay and the Ministry of Digital Economy, announced that GovPay—the country’s official government digital payment platform—has now integrated over 50 government organisations.
Launched by the President on February 7, 2025, GovPay facilitates around 700 government services in accepting secure digital payments and has processed over 7,000 transactions, generating Rs. 65.62 million in revenue. Officials hailed this as a key step toward a cashless, transparent, and citizen-centric digital economy.
Deputy Minister Eng. Eranga Weeraratne highlighted GovPay’s role in financial inclusion and economic empowerment, while ICTA Chairperson Dr. Hans Wijesuriya described it as pivotal for Sri Lanka’s full economic digitisation. The platform aims to onboard more than 100 organisations soon and exceed Rs. 1 billion in transaction value within a year, supporting the nation’s goal of a USD 15 billion digital economy.
Top users include major universities and public institutions, showing strong engagement. GovPay has also piloted a digital traffic fine payment system in select districts, processing 461 transactions.
LankaPay CEO Channa De Silva announced upcoming support for credit and debit card payments, including options for citizens abroad, with plans to expand GovPay to over 150 organisations by year-end. Acting ICTA CEO Sanjay Karunasena emphasized GovPay’s role as foundational Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), promoting interoperability and innovation.
ICTA launched a redesigned GovPay.lk website with real-time transaction dashboards to boost transparency. Government bodies are urged to onboard promptly, while citizens are encouraged to use GovPay via banks or FinTech apps for fast, secure public service payments.
